Two Ligue 1 seasons and a solid reputation, as solid as his defensive instincts. The final 18 metres – an area of the pitch he learnt to master whilst at Leeds, where he came through the ranks over seven years. Standing at 1.90 metres tall and with a knack for clearing the ball, he is the polar opposite of his father, a prolific centre-forward in the 1990s and 2000s who played for York City, Stoke City, Sheffield and, indeed, Leeds United.

Upon completing his youth training, the Preston-born player, after a few appearances in the Premier League, moved to Millwall in the English second tier. The loan spell proved a success, and Toulouse set their sights on the promising English player in the summer of 2024. Under Carles Martínez Novell, he soon established himself as a mainstay of Les Violets, thanks to his ability to intercept, his vision, his commitment in challenges and his formidable heading ability.

Having won the European Championship in 2023 and 2025 with the Young Lions, Charlie Cresswell has chosen SRFC and Roazhon Park to continue his rise to the top.

Arnaud Pouille, Executive Chairman – Chief Executive Officer:

“We are delighted to welcome Charlie, whom we have been expecting for several weeks. His personal and footballing qualities had, in fact, long been identified by all the club’s sporting departments. Charlie and his family were also quick to endorse Rennes’ project, despite numerous approaches from other clubs. It is therefore a real pleasure to finally be able to welcome him among his new team-mates just a few weeks before the league season resumes.”

Loïc Désiré, Sporting Director:

“Charlie ticked all the boxes for the profile we were looking for: athletic, a leader, and a complete player. We’re expanding our recruitment horizons across Europe. Following the signings of a Spanish and a Portuguese youth international, we’re now bringing in an English youth international with a bright future ahead of him. Charlie exudes positivity in his demeanour and the way he defends. He’ll also contribute off the pitch. Over the past few days, I’ve come to know him as someone with a great attitude, surrounded by a wonderful family.

We have a very strong squad in terms of team spirit and work ethic, and Charlie can only play an active part in fostering this overall atmosphere. We’re delighted to welcome him, especially as there was serious competition for his signature.”

Charlie Cresswell’s opening remarks:

“There’s been a lot of talk about my move to Rennes over the past few weeks. It’s brilliant to have finally arrived here and made this move a reality. I’m really very happy. I had two brilliant years at Toulouse – I couldn’t have hoped for better – but football is all about cycles, and the prospect of playing in European competition was a very good reason. The club has an exciting project and, in my view, an excellent squad this year. I hope we’ll achieve great things.”
