Frustration
“I’m frustrated for the players, who put in a lot of energy and showed a real desire to make an impact offensively. But we made too many mistakes to hope for three points. It’s starting to happen too often. After the mistake on the first goal, we managed to stay steady in our game plan. We had the chance to go 3–1 up before being too soft on the penalty situation. We’re a good team, but in those key areas, we need to be tougher. It’s something I see happening repeatedly — I’m disappointed and frustrated for the players. We saw some good things, but it wasn’t enough to take all three points.”
Key Areas
“We need to be stronger defensively, as a team, to avoid giving Auxerre those opportunities. On the second goal, we weren’t close enough, which is a shame because it cancels out a lot of good work. I have nothing to criticize in terms of the players’ attitude or energy — we have to keep building on the things we do well, like that magnificent second goal.
We’re too soft in the key areas. In the box, you have to make it difficult for the opponent when defending — these situations keep repeating themselves. Our players need to be tougher, more intense.”
Coaching
“Only two substitutions? I didn’t want to change players who looked physically strong. The rotations came at 2–2, in line with the match situation. Ludovic (Blas) had an excellent game, both technically and in his attitude.”
System
“We changed our system to try to protect certain players in specific runs, doubling up on positions with some asymmetry. It worked well — we saw a lot of Seko (Fofana), who was rewarded with a goal.
We’ve only lost once so far, but draws don’t help us move forward. We’re conceding too many goals — that’s something we have to face. It’s too much if we want to win games like tonight.”
